SMSTS Course

Our Site management safety training scheme – SMSTS course is CITB accredited and delivered by our own in-house qualified and experienced course instructors.
This five day health and safety course is designed for managers who are responsible for the; planning, organising, monitoring and controlling of operatives on a construction site and/or those individuals about to take up those responsibilities.
CITB Accreditation
The SMSTS course is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and recognised by BUILDUK as meeting the required standard for all supervisors and team leaders working on BUILDUK sites.
On successful completion of the course you will recieve a certificate from the CITB that will be valid for 5 years. In order to remain certified thereafter you will need to undertake a two day SMSTS Refresher course before the certificate expiry date.
CITB Grant

Course Availability
Tudar Skills Training runs the CITB SMSTS course frequently to meet the needs of its delegates. We understand that many individuals cannot afford to take time off during the week to undertake the course and for this reason you will find our five-day course is delivered in a number of different ways:
- During the week and at weekends

Course Materials & Examinations
All of the required course materials (CITB Construction Site Safety GE700 publication) are provided for in the cost of the course as are the enrollment and examination fees.
SMSTS Course Detail
The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which impact safe working on a construction site and how it applies to managers. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce
All CITB SMSTS course candidates are required to reach or exceed a minimum level of achievement throughout the course with assessment being determined by:
Attendance: In order to achieve the learning objectives candidates must attend all 5 days, in accordance with the course programme.
Exercise/Case Study: Candidates must successfully complete all individual and group exercises/case studies related to the 4 core modules.
Trainer Review: This provides a pass/fail based on the delegate’s performance and engagement in the core exercises and engagement in the course overall. Details of this are provided in XA6T.
Examination: The SMSTS exam paper consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course. The exam must be taken at the end of the course.

The two mark questions all relate to the seven health and safety focus areas. The higher marks recognise and reward the increased complexity of the question and response required.
The seven health and safety focus areas are founded on construction ill health, injury and fatality statistics:
The exam lasts for 35 minutes and must be completed within this time under exam conditions. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction site safety – The comprehensive guide (GE700) publication and the Construction site management delegate workbook (XA6) for the last 15 minutes of the exam.
The exam paper forms part of the overall assessment as to whether the delegate has successfully achieved the Site Management Safety Training Scheme and demonstrated both knowledge of the relevant statutory provisions as well as the application of management in respect of health and safety issues.
On successful completion of the SMSTS course and associated assessment candidates will be awarded the CITB: Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate. This certificate will remain extant for five years after which the SMSTS refresher course must be undertaken in order for individuals maintain qualification for a further 5 years.
The course covers relevant health, safety and environmental legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.
There are no formal entry requirements, however, delegates should hold, or be about to hold, the role of a site manager. Previous health and safety knowledge is recommended. Those without previous health and safety management experience are recommended to sit the two-day SSSTS course. Delegates must be competent in written and spoken English necessary for operating efficiently at site management level.
The SMSTS course content covers the legislation that impacts upon safe working practice within the construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace and the implementation of the hierarchy of control measures, whilst providing guidance to managers in developing and maintaining an appropriate health and safety culture within the workplace.

CITB SMSTS Course Accreditation & Recognition
The course is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as part of the Site Safety Plus course suite and recognised by BUILDUK as meeting the required standard for site supervisors working on BUILDUK sites.

Pre-Requisites for the SMSTS Course
The minimum entry requirement for the SMSTS course is a good understanding of spoken and written English. If you have any concerns in this area, please call us on 0203 633 5505.
Course Funding/Grants
CITB Registered employers who are up to date with their Levy Returns are able to claim (subject to approval) a grant for all; directly employed staff on the payroll, business owners and partners, and all subcontractors, who undertake this course.
Please ensure that your delegate provides your Company Name, Registered Address and CITB Levy number (in the notes section) when making the booking. The CITB will then process the grant using those details directly with the registered company on completion of the course.

SSP Course Design
